Scenario: The session has been stuck on how to use open space in the church building, and how to stay connected in outreach without having to do yet MORE. They wonder about pitching in with service already going on in town for mission in 2026. Two deacons and one church volunteer run point to explore serving the community. One of the three is Bob (who also did the preaching workshop/sermon sessions). He works with the mentor and catalyst to pull together a series of four February “minute for missions” in worship. At light lunches afterward the congregation learns about needs in town. The line-up includes the principal from the elementary school about kids struggling with poverty and lack of afterschool options; the head of the volunteer fire department who talks about fatigue and exposure to trauma among the volunteers; the assistant director of the little library; and the Salvation Army storefront employee. Everyone at church learns new bits about what is happening in their town. The congregation decides to connect twice a year with the school community – join in when the local school organizes a back-to-school “pack the backpacks” day, and in the fall to provide a drop-in meal in the fellowship hall on parent-teacher conference night. One deacon takes point to organize these. The congregation also decides to learn more about demands on first-responders, and deliver a holiday meal to the fire station volunteers with notes of appreciation and care. The second deacon takes point on this expression of care to firefighters.
Time invested: Community service minutes for missions planned in December 2025, held in February 2026. Attend a Saturday of backpack packing, one day August 2026. Parent-teacher conference dinner offered late September 2026 with extra days of planning leading up to that. An early thanksgiving dinner with notes of care are delivered to the 10 member volunteer fire department for their mid-November 2026 evening meeting.
Grant provided resources: Mentor supports Bob in inviting the four community “minute for mission presenters.” Grant pays for a modest honorarium for each speaker. Grant funds pay for church lunches the Sundays including the mission speakers. The mentor supports the two deacons in planning and delegating elements of the two meals – back to school night, and firefighter Thanksgiving. Mentor and catalyst with UD choose some brief pamphlets on the stressors and possible supports for first responders to be read by those interested in the church. Grant funds pay for the groceries for the meals assembled.
